Caldwell Hart Colt Memorial Parish House (1895)

155 Wyllys Street

The Caldwell Hart Colt Memorial Parish House was build by Elizabeth Colt in memory of her only child who survived into adulthood, Caldwell Hart Colt. Caldwell died in Punta Gorda, Florida in 1894. The building was designed by Edward Tuckerman Potter and was dedicated in 1895. Because Caldwell was an avid sailor the building resembles a ship and is covered with nautical symbols. The building served as a community center for Colt Armory workers, replacing Charter Oak Hall which was built by Sam Colt but burned down. The grounds were designed by Frederick Law Olmsted.
